Vysoke Tatry, major tourist region
Vysoke Tatry, or High Tatras as the english-speaking world likes to call it, is a mountain range on the Slovakia-Poland border. The High Tatras constitute a part of the Carpathian mountain range which spans from Romania to Slovakia.
Accommodation establishments in the High Tatras include not just hotels, but also accommodation in private homes - this kind of accommodation is somewhat typical for slovak beyond-the-city tourism and is cheap as well as comfortable. Hotels in Tatras also range from simple and affordable to downright luxurious.
Though the infrastructure still isn't what it should be, the situation is improving by the day- but still, you might have trouble getting around, especially off-season, when the busses to smaller villages run sparsely. If you're travelling by car or are staying at a hotel, you shouldn't have any trouble though.
So pick what you like or discover something you've never tried before:
- High Tatras Accommodation - hotels, B&Bs, cottages rented whole and private homes hand-picked by a local operator. Hotel booking by a trusted international reservation operator, smaller establishments booked directly at the owner. Also contains useful tourist information.
- Booking.com High Tatras - accommodation options from Europe's biggest reservation operator, includes both slovak and polish Tatras
Nizke Tatry - Jasna, the tourist resort of the 1st category
Nizke Tatry, or Low Tatras, located in the central part of Slovakia, are also a part of the Carpathian mountain range - its westernmost part, to be precise. Thanks to their convenient localisation and climate, which is a little milder than High Tatras mentioned before, resorts in the Low Tatras are Slovakia's top skiing destinations with good infrastructure and an ever growing number of ski tows. Everything in the Low Tatras is focused on skiing and winter sports.
For reasons unknown the Low Tatras are not very popular for summer hiking trips, which may be the right time for some of you to get there, as nature is still pretty untouched and masses of people move to the High Tatras for summer, leaving its lower cousin almost deserted.
If you're looking for skiing resorts, you may want to check out Demanovska Dolina (or just Jasna or Chopok-Jasna), Tale, Donovaly.
Accommodation in the Low Tatras include, as usual, hotels, apartment houses and B&Bs, varying in price and quality. On the following pages you can find accommodation in the most popular tourist resorts together with off-the-beaten-track spots:
Liptov - Slovakia's cradle of folklore
Whichever part of Slovakia you visit, you can't get any more folk-slovak than Liptov. Almost every village you pass through is somehow connected to the legends of the greatest of all slovak (and the whole of "Upper Hungary" back in the days of the Austro-Hungarian empire) bandits - Juro Janosik. This is also the home of the well-known slovak national folk-food "bryndzove halusky" (the english, unpoetical name"dumplings with sheep cheese" really doesn't do the food justice), the tasting of which is a must for every tourist visiting Liptov.
Liptov, in addition to the afforementioned, also offers wonderful nature and places for summer and winter sports alike (including spas, aquaparks, mineral springs...), has a good infrastructure and is located on or near the northern highway through Slovakia, making it convenient as a basecamp for day trips almost anywhere in Slovakia.
Plenty of accommodation to choose from - from staying in the towns to villages to tourist resorts, every option has its advantages.
- Booking.com Liptov - a list of hotels throughout Liptov - from Strbske Pleso to Demanovska Dolina.
Zilina - at the historical crossroads
Zilina is the administrative and cultural centre of North-western Slovakia and is quickly becoming more important. Not only is it at the crossroads (close to the borders with Czech republic and Poland), but also lies on the northern slovak highway, making it convenient for tourists to travel to and also companies to invest in. Combined with its surroundings it is a great place for commerce and tourism alike.
As a centre of the four most distinct historical regions of Slovakia - Liptov, Orava, Kysuce and Turiec, everyone can find what he's interested in, may it be castles, ruins, folklore traditions, great food, nature for hiking or skiing, curative spas or just relax.
